We hope our repertoire will offer new experiences to reflect on and that it will result in many stimulating conversations. Sharing these experiences together in the auditorium is special. If you are for some reason unable to get to the opera house, visit Operan Play where several of the spring performances can be enjoyed for free online.
Welcome to the Royal Swedish Opera spring season!

At last, a new year, my first with the Royal Swedish Opera! I can hardly wait for the new season to begin, with everything from a powerful, important new Swedish opera, The Promise, great favourites including The Marriage of Figaro, La fanciulla del West and Aida, to a sparkling new production of Suor Angelica/Gianni Schicchi.
We present an outstanding ensemble of soloists as well as guest performers and our fantastic chorus. Our new, pre-eminent music director, Alan Gilbert, will be leading the Royal Swedish Orchestra. Our excellent artistic team and technical staff will yet again offer unforgettable experiences.

The Promise (Löftet) is the story of Ava who becomes separated from her husband, Teo, in a concentration camp. Determined to be reunited with her husband after the war, she is prepared to search all over the ruins of a traumatised Europe. We accompany her on a journey that sways between dream and reality, hope and despair.
An opera about Ava and Teo and the invincible power of love. The work, which she has written together with composer Mats Larsson Gothe, was inspired by a real event in Susanne Marko’s family background. The Promise will be performed for the first time on 27 January, International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Two powerful stories about people undergoing a crisis. We get to laugh as well as cry. The desire to love and inheritance disputes are both eternal problems, for better or worse. Two short gems in the Italian realist opera tradition with Puccini at the peak of his powers.
Wilhelm Carlsson has directed a string of acclaimed theatre and opera productions at, for example, the Royal Dramatic Theatre and Wermland Opera. This production is set in Italy in the 17th and 13th centuries but moves back and forth in time.

After critically acclaimed successes in 2016 and 2020, the Royal Swedish Opera returns with Short Stories – a tailormade concept that promotes new Swedish opera by offering composers and librettists an opportunity to write for the opera stage.

Staffan Valdemar Holm’s version of Die Walküre has been acclaimed for the way he has defined each character through his direction, especially the relationship between the father, Wotan, and his daughter, Brünnhilde. The strict, Nordic décor by Bente Lykke Møller is deeply rooted in the Royal Swedish Opera’s long Wagner tradition and invites the audience to a visual and existential synthesis of the arts to the accompaniment of the most divine music.
The wonderful music is performed by some of Sweden’s most acclaimed international opera singers. The dramatic soprano Irene Theorin sings Brünnhilde, Cornelia Beskow sings the role of Sieglinde and Katarina Dalayman appears as Fricka. All under the baton of the Opera’s new music director, Alan Gilbert.
In Nozze di Figaro desire lurks behind every door, and the most curious misunderstandings bring everything to a head. Who will marry whom? Whose love is sincere and true …?

Can love conquer all? A society is crumbling against a background of war, power struggle and religious war. Aida is in the line of fire between two warring parties and is held prisoner by the enemy. Against all odds, she falls in love with Radamès.

We begin the season by paying tribute to the Ballets Suédois with a new playful version of La boîte à Joujoux (The Toy Box) with costumes and sets designed by the artist Bea Szenfeld and choreography by Jean-Guillaume Bart. The second part of the evening is dedicated to Roland Petit’s intense, world-famous drama Carmen.
Alexander Ekman’s much anticipated, spectacular Escapist, with a score by Mikael Karlsson and costumes by Henrik Vibskov, fill up our senses before we round off the season with Tamara Rojo’s new version of Cinderella with costumes and sets by Christian Lacroix.
We believe that our team of creative artists will offer you some wonderful moments during the course of the spring, as will music by Debussy, Bizet, Mikael Karlsson and Prokofiev.

Cinderella is washed up alone in a Stockholm port. She is immediately taken to an orphanage where she ends up at the bottom of the pecking order. When the dull jury of the big dance contest rejects Cinderella at her first audition because her style is too bold and explosive, she gets help from her friends.
An entirely new production created especially for the Royal Swedish Ballet by Tamara Rojo, artistic director of the English National Ballet. The colourful costumes by fashion icon Christian Lacroix and famous music by Prokofiev make for a vibrant evening of dance for the whole family.

Daydreaming, escape from reality, the power of the imagination … are you an escapist? Following acclaimed productions of Midsommarnattsdröm at the Royal Swedish Opera, Play at the Opéra National de Paris and A Swan Lake in Oslo, Alexander Ekman created Escapist, which premiered at the Royal Opera in 2019.
One of the world’s foremost contemporary choreographers, he has created ballets that invariably surprises and delights. Over and over. Escapist was sold out, received standing ovations and was both critically acclaimed and loved by the audience.

When Swan Lake – the ballet of all ballets – was first performed in 1877 it was more or less a fiasco. It was not until after Tchaikovsky’s death, and with a new choreography, that what we now know as the classic version was born in 1895.
Following Rudolf Nureyev’s earlier versions of Swan Lake, his production at L’Opéra de Paris in 1984 is considered the definitive, final version. Until now, it has never been performed in Sweden. Swan Lake is one of the most frequently performed ballets in the world, it has been staged 830 times at the Royal Swedish Opera.

Gerda has no parents, but she has a friend called Kaj who is kidnapped by the cunning, cold Snow Queen. Will she find him before his heart has turned to ice? During her big adventure Gerda encounters many fascinating figures…
The Snow Queen is a new work by the Swedish composer Benjamin Staern. It is a heart-warming opera based on a short story by H. C. Andersen that is full of drama, humour and love. Following the premiere at Malmö Opera in 2016, a critic wrote: »A gorgeous adventure for all ages. And the moral of the story: never stop believing in the victory of the heart; yes please, let it snow over us this and every other Christmas.«
A collaboration with Malmö Opera.
A family production suitable for children from the age of 5.

At The Heart Of It All (Hjärtat inuti) is primarily created for children with functional variations. It is set in a fascinating, constantly changing world – an imaginary journey in eight scenes that celebrate playfulness and imagination. Together with three dancers and one singer, the audience is immersed in a flux of spirited interplay of movement, songs and whispers within fantastical stage and costumes inspired by the microscopic world.
Dalija Acin Thelander is back with a work that offers an unexpected view of the world. In 2017 she created
A Myriad Worlds, based on choreography, sound and space - a work for babies and their accompanying adults.

Some 20 singers make up the Royal Swedish Opera soloist ensemble. Swedish and international artists also take part in Operan’s productions; some of the world’s finest opera singers will appear on the main stage in spring, including Malin Byström, Aleksandrs Antonenko, Asmik Grigorian, Iréne Theorin, Katarina Dalayman and Greer Grimsley.
Bears, vampires or three-legged grisettes … the Royal Swedish Opera Chorus master their art at the highest level while acting and dancing on stage. The Royal Swedish Opera Chorus appeared at the very first premiere in 1773. It has been a vital part of our institution ever since.
The Royal Swedish Ballet, Sweden’s largest ballet company, is among the oldest ballet companies in the world. It was founded in 1773 by King Gustav III.
Our mission is to curate and develop a well-balanced repertoire of classical and contemporary works.
Alan Gilbert’s first opera performance on the main stage was the revival of Wagner’s Die Walküre during autumn 2021. In spring 2020, he conducted a string of concerts in the Golden Foyer for Operan Play, one of which featured Nina Stemme for the European opera channel Operavision.
Alan Gilbert enjoys a worldwide reputation as one of today’s most respected and versatile conductors of both symphonic music and opera. The winner of several International Grammy Awards, he is renowned for his solid musicianship, ambitious programming and diverse interests beyond the core repertoire.
We are proud to be joined by a visionary conductor of this calibre, someone who will inspire the whole organization musically and will be at the heart of everything we do. His leadership will no doubt enable us to take our company to the next level in terms of artistic breadth and excellence. With his long connection to the city and our company, Alan will not only be our new Music Director, he will be a member of the ‘family’,” says Operan’s CEO, Birgitta Svendén.
Itinerant “pipers and trumpeters” were the original founders of the Royal Swedish Orchestra. Almost 500 years later, it is not only one of the oldest orchestras in the world, it is also Sweden’s largest with 105 members. From having been a court institution during King Gustav Vasa, it is now, since the foundation of the Royal Swedish Opera in 1773, the heart of our institution by bringing together all our art forms.
You normally see the orchestra in the pit between the main stage and the stalls. Apart from performing at lunch concerts, members of the Royal Orchestra and the Royal Chorus may appear where you least expect it. Our new Music Director, the international conductor Alan Gilbert, leads the Royal Swedish Orchestra.

The Royal Swedish Orchestra celebrates Wagner – one of classical music’s most important influencers. Wagner is the uncrowned king of opera repertoires, and the Royal Swedish Orchestra is a proper Wagner orchestra; Wagner is one of their favourite composers. But audiences do not only encounter Wagner through his operas.
We would like to welcome all gamers, film geeks and Wagnerians to a greatest hits concert. Just as film is best enjoyed at the cinema, Wagner is undoubtedly at his best when performed by the full force of the Royal Swedish Orchestra until the opera house shakes at its foundations.
